Biblical Contradiction Explained: Murderers must be killed or not killed:
Murderers must not be killed:
So the LORD said to him, “Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one finding him would slay him.
Genesis 4:15
Murderers must be killed:
Surely I will require your lifeblood; from every beast I will require it. And from every man, from every man’s brother I will require the life of man.
“Whoever sheds man’s blood,
By man his blood shall be shed,
For in the image of God
He made man.Genesis 9:5-6
Explanation:
To say that these passages contradict is to be intellectually dishonest. The first issue with this alleged contradiction is a matter of timing. The covenant made with Noah (referenced in Genesis 9:5-6) occurred long after Cain killed his brother Abel (referenced in Genesis 4:15).
Further, Cain’s punishment was specific to Cain. There is no reason to believe that Cain’s punishment must be the standard punishment for all murderers.
