Dispensationalism vs. Partial Preterism: the Mark of the Beast:
According to Scripture, the Mark of the Beast, or the Mark of the Antichrist, will identify those who worship the Antichrist as a God. Unless one possesses this mark on the right hand or their forehead, they will be unable to buy and sell and will face persecution. Revelation reveals this mark to be the number 666; identified as the “number” of the Antichrist.
Scripture Reference:
He [the Antichrist] also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead,
Revelation 13:16
Dispensational belief regarding the Mark of the Beast:
Most dispensationalist believe the Mark of the Beast will be a literal, visible Mark which will in some way represent the number 666. They often suggest the Mark of the Beast may be a tattoo, microchip, or other form of permanent marking.
Partial Preterist belief regarding the Mark of the Beast:
Partial Preterist dismiss the concept of a literal mark of the Beast on the right hand and forehead as being inconsiderate of Old Testament references to receiving such a Mark. They site this is a very common figure of speech used in the Old Testament to mean one is a follower:
This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that this law of the LORD is to be on your lips. For the LORD brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand.
Exodus 13:9
And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead that the LORD brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand.”
Exodus 13:16
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
Deuteronomy 6: 6-8
Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
Deuteronomy 11:18
Some will say, ‘I belong to the LORD’; others will call themselves by the name of Jacob; still others will write on their hand, ‘The LORD’s,’ and will take the name Israel.
Isaiah 44:5
and said to him, ‘Go throughout the city of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament over all the detestable things that are done in it.”
Ezekiel 9:4
From now on, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.
