What is a cherubim:
According to scripture, cherubim are four winged, four faced angels whose bodies’ are covered with eyes:
and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. In appearance their form was that of a man, but each of them had four faces and four wings.
Ezekiel 1:5-6
Their entire bodies, including their backs, their hands, and their wings, were completely full of eyes, as were their four wheels. I heard the wheels being called “the whirling wheels.” Each of the cherubim had four faces; One face was that of a cherub, the second the face of a man, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.
Ezekiel 10:12-14
Biblical scholars are undecided as about the symbolic significance of these angels. Some argue the four faces represent the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Others argue the four faces represent the four “natures of God.” Though, what “natures” they represent are unclear and vary was person to person.
Some suggest cherubim sit before the throne of God:
In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in the front and back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had the face of a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying:
‘Holy, holy, holy,
is the Lord God Almighty,
who was, and is, and is to come.’Revelation 4:6-8
However, the description of these angels is too different from the description found within Ezekiel to identify these angels as cherubim. Each angel only has one face and six wings. As opposed to cherubim who are described as having four faces and four wings. It more likely these angels are seraphim, not cherubim.
The most reasonable conclusion regarding the symbolic significance of cherubim is that we cannot conclude (or even reasonably guess) the significance of these angels. Scripture simply does not provide enough information to draw any conclusions.
